The World Wide Web can be a scary place for a company. It’s an open mic night for anyone who wants to say something negative about your company. Since there are so many opportunities for people to disparage your company it is important that you are constantly engaging in online reputation management to keep consumers from turning on your company.

Online reputation management involves monitoring what is showing up in regards to your company on search engines as well as looking for content that can be harmful for your company. When you find things that aren’t exactly ideal for your company you need to address the problem and get positive content at the top of search engine results while lowering the negative results. This is similar to when a company engages in search engine optimization, except the purpose is different. Search engine optimization involves promoting positive content and getting your pages to the top of a results page, reputation management seeks to drive content down the results pages and hide the content from potential search engine users.

The way a company responds and engages in reputation management can also define how consumers see them. Sometimes companies pose as customers on review sites and give positive reviews to their own products so people will disregard the negative reviews. This is considered unethical and should be avoided because if your company is found doing this it will just lead to a bigger headache for you and more negative publicity.

A good way to respond to negative reviews is to contact the reviewer and see if there’s anything you can do to mend the problem. Consumers like to see that a company cares about them and will appreciate that you listened to their concerns and took the time to resolve the situation. Sending free products to prominent reviewers can also help your company because the reviewers are thought leaders and can help sway the opinion of your product dramatically.

Online reputation management is increasingly becoming more important by the day. When people are making a big purchase they will go online and look for product reviews to see which brand is right for them. It is important to make sure the things being said about your product on search engine results and on websites is positive, not negative.

It is important to use reputation management to keep individuals and companies engaged in your business. Using a search engine tool is also very important. Let your followers know what retweeting is and encourage them to retweet your links. Retweeting pushes your @username into foreign social graphs, resulting in clicks back to your profile. Track your retweets using retweetist. Fill out your bio. Your latest tweets and @replies don’t mean much to someone that doesn’t know you. Your bio is the only place you have to tell people who you are. Also, your bio is displayed on Twitter’s Suggested Users page. Leaving it blank or non-descriptive does not encourage individuals to add you.

As @claydarrohn says, “link it up.” Place links to your Twitter profile everywhere. Link it on your Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, blog, email signature, and everywhere else you live online. Also, check out the great feedburner-like badges from TwitterCounter for your blog.

Tweet about your passions in life and #hash tag them. Quality content coupled with a simple way to find it never fails. If others appreciate your content, they’ll add you. Learn more about #hash tagging so you know what you are doing with them.

Bring your twitter account into the physical world. Every time I give a talk, speak on a panel, shoot a podcast, present slides, or hand out business cards, I come up with a way to broadcast or display my twitter account.

Take pictures. Pictures are heavily retweeted/spread around. One from US Airways Flight 1549 has been viewed 350,000+ times. For mobile pics use iPhone apps such as Tweetie or Twitterific, both which support on the go uploading.

Start a contest. @jasoncalacanis offered a free macbook air if he reached the #1 most followed spot. That never happened, but Jason added thousands of followersbrilliant.

Follow the top twitter users and watch what they tweet. Pay attention to the type of content they send out and how they address their audiences. Reply to/get involved in #hash tag memes. search.twitter.com lists the hot ‘trending topics. Look for the #hash topics and jump in on the conversation (see #4 for links to #hash instructions). Track your results. TwitterCounter will show you how many new users you’re following per day and Qwitter will email you when someone unfollows you after a tweet.

Article Marketing

With the increased use of the internet article marketing is growing more and more prominent. Article marketing is the act of writing articles related to your industry and then making these articles available for distribution. Ideally there will be contact information at the end of the article for the author and their business. The purpose of article marketing is to try and show you are well versed in your industry and you and your company can be trusted to do good work since you are knowledgeable.

Article marketing has been happening long before the advent of the internet. Business owners used to write and submit articles to their local newspapers or magazines and if the newspapers and magazines deemed the article worthy content they would include the businesses contact information at the bottom of the article. For example, around Christmas time a local toy store would maybe write an article entitled “Top 10 Toys this Holiday Season” and have a helpful guide to help parents choose the right gifts for their child. Ideally after reading this article the parents would go to the toy store listed at the bottom because they feel they would know and have what they are looking for.

As the internet grew in prominence article marketing became even easier for businesses because they now had access to many more outlets. Business owners now have the option of submitting their articles to article directories. Article directories host a large amount of different articles on different topics and are typically though of as websites that are a good source of information. Due to this, they appear high on search engine results pages and receive a lot of traffic. Article marketers often take advantage of the numerous article directories by writing an article and then slightly editing it into a few different forms so it can be placed in different article directories and not appear as a duplicate. This is called article spinning.

A good article to be used for article marketing should ideally be at least 300 words and contain keywords that the author feels will generate the most attention on search engines. While article marketing the authors need to be careful not to repeat the same keywords too much as this can be considered keyword stuffing and this is considered to be unethical.

The internet has opened up the door for article marketing to thrive. As long as article directories continue to be relevant and high on search engine results marketers will continue to write articles that increase the visibility of their business.
