Effective communication – we don’t need to remind you that this is what you need in order to cultivate a long and productive relationship with clients. But what you probably are not aware of yet is that writing forceful and captivating articles is less about product knowledge than it is about writing skill.

It would be in your best interests to make your clientele aware of your writing skills and not limit yourself to what you can do as a writer.

Every business has its own specialists, people who know more about their products and services than you’ll ever know. So why can’t they produce great marketing copy, clear user guides, or truly effective training for their employees and sales reps?

Because they are bereft of the skills YOU have as a writer, which are the skills to create forceful results through effective communication. Throughout our lifetime, we are bound to meet a few people, experts, if you may, in their fields, who are painfully deficient in the area of knowledge sharing – it may have been that boring Physics teacher of yours from high school, or your family doctor who can’t explain your kid’s minor ailment in a way you can understand.

At some point, a company realizes they need help communicating, educating prospects, customers, and their own employees about the benefits and best practices associated with their products and services. And when the time comes for them to enlist outside help, they scratch their heads trying to remember why they did that!

Your success over the long haul is predicated on how well you remind people about the need for effective communication. Most of these experts, whether clinicians or programmers or engineers or legal experts, are more comfortable talking to people just like themselves, rather than creative types like artists and writers.

Left to themselves, they’ll hire someone who knows a lot about their area, but perhaps writes only a little better than they do. It would be too little, too late once the results are in and yet another person is being considered for the writing job – as expected, there hasn’t been much change in terms of the efficacy of the training material and ad copy.

If you know how to help yourself, you can help your clients out as well.

If you are given the chance to speak to a client about how you can help create effective communications, do what you could to redirect your conversation to how you can help them to this end. They may have their own in-house staff members but you should make sure they understand it is important to get some help from the outside. Make them realize that it is your skills as a writer that should mesh with their technical know-how, and with those two combined, the company has only more to gain in terms of customers, sales, employee performance and of course, their bottom line.

Knowing the subject matter of a certain company or industry can help, but your writing skills enhance that knowledge. It wouldn’t be long before these knowledgeable individuals would need to brush up on new knowledge due to the launching of a new product or service or a new technological advancement.

Companies will always have an ongoing need for effective communication, and by serving as not just a freelance business writer but also as a communications expert, you can ensure that the company’s business will always be fertile despite changing trends in the business climate.
