5 Interesting Social Media Sites That Aren’t Facebook Or Twitter
Too often when people refer to social media, they only think about Facebook or Twitter. There are many social media sites existing other than the two giants that are worth visiting.
1. deviantArt- deviantArt is a social media website that enables users from all over the world to impart their artwork. After the pieces of artwork are posted they are open for discussion and people are able to comment on them and share their opinion. The website is organized by category so it is easy to find art that interests you and you can network with users who are interested in the same kind of art as you. deviantArt can be a source of inspiration as you’re always being presented with new types of art from artists all over the world. With 140,000 submissions a day there will be no shortage of artwork to gawk at.
2. Digg- Digg is a news aggregator that is controlled by the masses. Stories are put up on Digg and users either “digg” them and move them up on the site and get more visitors to the story or “bury” them and move them down the page. Digg has led to a number of knockoff websites, but it still remains used and has a healthy amount of traffic daily. The idea of letting users determine what stories should be seen as the most important was a novel one and users love having that feeling of control over the content of a website.
3. Reddit- Reddit is similar to Digg in the way that users vote posts either up or down and this determines what makes the front page. Where they vary is their content. Digg is based around articles from other sites on the internet while Reddit allows user generated matter to be posted for either “upvotes” or “downvotes”. Due to this a lot of the content on Reddit is silly and based around wit rather than grave news articles. Reddit is an awesome way to waste time, you go on for 5 minutes and end up staying for an hour.
4. Flickr- If deviantArt is the social media website for art enthusiasts then Flickr is the social media site for photography enthusiasts. Flickr allows users to host their photos on their website and other users are allowed to comment on the photos. Photos can be tagged with particular topics which allows users to easily look for photos that interest them. Users can also label their images, get more visitors to their images, and make them capable for stock use so they can receive payment each time they are used. This is a fine example of social media marketing on a small scale.
5. LinkedIn- LinkedIn will sometimes go overlooked in favor of Facebook and Twitter, but if you are a working professional it is a critical tool. LinkedIn is great for networking with other professionals that work in the same sector as yourself and also for discussing transformations that are taking place within your chosen profession. If you are looking for a job LinkedIn also has a great job board available and potential employers will be able to see your prior experience right on your LinkedIn profile.
Social media websites are being made on regular basis, don’t get sucked into the appeal of Facebook and Twitter and forget to explore other social media sites that could cater to your interests more.
